The addition of the Bironox™ to water can be an effective treatment technology capable of reducing the levels of contaminants in wastewater and aquatic environments and their associated sediments. Bironox is an oxygen releasing compound which increases the oxygen content of contaminated areas, enhancing biological activity and thus promoting natural attenuation.
In high organic load contaminated waters such as fish farms, wastewater, swine lagoons, etc., microbial mediated aerobic degradation is limited by the amount of oxygen in waters. Aerobic processes rapidly use up the dissolved molecular oxygen (DO) in contaminated areas and can depress the DO to less than 0.5 mg/L. Under conditions of oxygen depletion several anaerobic biodegradation processes, including denitrification, iron reduction, sulfate reduction and methanogenesis, can use other electron acceptors.
Use of Bironox into wastewater and aquatic environments creates a zone of sustained high DO (dissolved oxygen) in water and changes the dominant high organic water conditions from anaerobic to aerobic. The oxygen-enhanced zone is able to biodegrade high organic sediments and immobilizes suspended pollutants, which had been relatively resistant to natural attenuation under the initial anaerobic conditions. Thus, Bironox can be used advantageously for the oxygenation of the build up of sediments, both suspended and sub-aqueous.
